Socorro to make Old Hueco Tanks Road improvements

By: Stacey Welsh

SOCORRO, Texas -- Socorro is getting closer to starting construction on Old Hueco Tanks Road, something the city said the community has needed for years.

Besides paving the road, construction would make the road two lanes in each direction instead of one.

The city expects to start construction by 2015, but needs permission from the landowners around the road to do so.

A new road could also make way for stores and commercial development in the area.

"It looks like everybody's willing to donate. They understand if they donate to the land, it will increase in value with the commercial activity coming in," Socorro Mayor Jesus Ruiz said.

The construction would also provide people living in the area a new way in and out of Socorro. Most drivers currently use Horizon Boulevard.

I think that's a great idea, and it's needed in this area. A lot of times, it's hard to get across. With that interchange, it's going to make things a lot smoother. So I think progress is good," Fabens resident Rick Garza said.

The project costs about $10 million. Ruiz said Socorro expects to pay about $1.5 million, and the Texas Department of Transportation will fund the rest.
