Attorneys for alleged Manhattan Heights predator receive 30-day extension
By: Jesse Martinez
EL PASO, Texas New court-appointed attorneys for the alleged Manhattan Heights predator said they have every intention to go to trial, but they're not ready just yet.
On Tuesday, the attorneys for Arturo Valtierra-Payan asked for and received a 30-day extension to review the case more carefully. They were appointed to defend the rape suspect in November.
"I wanted more time to evaluate which cases we are handling, which experts we are going to need and everything else, and at this point, we just still need to evaluate a lot of evidence in the case," said defense attorney Partick Lara.
Valtierra-Payan was accused of three home invasion rapes in central El Paso, and prosecutors said DNA evidence also linked him to a separate rape case in Fort Worth.
His attorneys said they expect prosecutors to push for a life sentence and they intend to fight it.
