Third arrest made in Dona Ana County home invasion

DONA ANA COUNTY, N.M.  - Authorities in Dona Ana County made a third arrest in connection with a home invasion where the homeowner allegedly fought off four men and killed one of the intruders. 

Nathan M. Avalos was arrested and charged by the Dona Ana County Sheriff's Office with with aggravated residential burglary, two counts of conspiracy to commit a third-degree felony and criminal damage to property

The alleged home invasion happened on New Year's Eve when Avalos and three other men forced their way into Joseph Torrez's home on King James Avenue.

During a press conference held by the Sheriff's Office, Torrez's attorney said his client acted in self-defense when he fought the four men. As a result, one of the alleged intruders, Sal Garces, was beaten and stabbed to death during the incident.

Torrez's is a construction worker and mixed martial arts fighter. Torrez has not been charged at this time.

The investigation is ongoing, authorities said Tuesday morning.
