El Paso County plans to build new east side annex
By: Stacey Welsh
EL PASO, Texas -- A new county facility could save many east side residents a drive to downtown El Paso. El Paso County plans to start construction on a new annex near the intersection of George Dieter Drive and Robert Wynn Street in about a month.
"If you need to pay something that you owe to the county, whether it be fines or assessments, it can be done there," El Paso County Precinct 1 Commissioner Carlos Leon said.
Leon said services like marriage licenses, birth certificates, and building permits will be available at the new annex. Some of the county's probation officers will also work out of the annex.
In addition to those services, the annex will have a meeting room that can hold about 100 people. Leon said it is geared toward holding events for nonprofit organizations.
He also said the project costs about $2 million.
"It's much more convenient. It would be a huge help. Downtown is maybe a 20-minute ride. You put that into your day, and it adds up," East El Paso resident Cornelia Patterson said.
Leon said the commissioner will also have an office at the new location, making it more convenient for people living in the east side to share their opinions.
"I would if I had a concern. I think it's helpful for people who live in this part of the town to have access like that," Patterson said.
Some said they've been waiting for more services like this to come to the east side.
"Over here by the far east side, that's the fastest-growing area. You can tell over by where the new construction is going on," East El Paso resident Luis Lucero said.
"The east side is exploding like Loop 375, Montana Avenue and areas just north of the freeway. That's where the population is growing, and this means a lot," Leon said.
There are also plans to expand the annex in the future. Leon said that expansion could add services like buying or renewing license plates, and maybe even more jobs in the future.
