Contract approved for second phase of San Jacinto Plaza renovation
By: Jesse Martinez
EL PASO, Texas City Council announced a $4.5 million contract for the second phase of improvements to San Jacinto Plaza, which is expected to be completed by February 2015.
Upgrades to the Plaza include a 50-square-foot shade to protect Luis Jimenez's "Los Lagartos" sculpture that is currently being restored in Ohio, a reflecting pool, benches, a full service caf and other upgrades.
"This is a transformational project not just for downtown, but for all of El Paso," said Sean McGlynn, interim deputy city manager for development and tourism. "San Jacinto Plaza has always been a place where we gather together as a community; this project retains familiar and historic elements while adding amenities El Pasoans deserve."
The 54-foot Afghan pine will remain at the plaza, and the city's Celebration of Lights will take place at Cleveland Park Square again this year, officials said.
Work began in summer 2013 and crews have worked on rebuilding curbs and gutters as well as extending the area by 10 feet in all directions.
"With authorization to execute this contract, we can now provide the community a firm date on when this project should be completed," said Irene Ramirez, P.E., interim city engineer. "Since the beginning, we had estimated completion of this project in late 2014 or early 2015 and now we are looking forward to substantial completion in February 2015."
