Teenage boy dies in car accident, sister fights for life
By Crystal Price
EL PASO, Texas -- An El Paso teenager has died after an alleged alcohol-related accident in the lower valley on Saturday.
Thirteen-year-old Pablo Hernandez died after the vehicle he was traveling in on North Loop was struck by a driver authorities said was speeding and drinking.
Authorities were called to the scene at 4:26 p.m. on Saturday where they said a 2004 Chevrolet Suburban had been rear-ended by an F-150.
Police said the driver of the F-150 was speeding and had been drinking.
Hernandez was also traveling with mother, Patricia, and his 15-year-old sister, Isabel.
His sister, Isabel, remains in critical condition at Del Sol Hospital.
Authorities said neither of the two teenagers were wearing seat belts.
Pablo Hernandez was a student at Ricardo Estrada Junior High where he played basketball.
David Walker, Pablo's uncle, remembers his nephew's personality.
"He taught our family to laugh, with his fun-loving personality, and his 'Jim Carey antics,'" Walker said.
Walker said the family had just finished a day of attending basketball and baseball games and family members were on their way home from eating at Peter Piper Pizza.
Fifteen-year-old Isabel is a student at Horizon High School and also plays basketball.
More than 200 family and friends packed Del Sol Hospital on Sunday to offer their love and support as she clings to life.
"It's nice to see that she, my niece and nephew are loved by so many people," Walker said. "You know it really helps us through this time."
Authorities have not yet released the name of the man who hit the family but they say charges are pending.
"One bad decision creates senseless tragedy all around us and it can all be avoided," Walker said. "Just say no to drinking."
Family and friends are planning a vigil on the 9300 block of North Loop on Monday at 5:30 p.m.
The Hernandez family is also working on a memorial fund for Pablo Hernandez at Wells Fargo.
