Ballpark reaches milestone after final piece of steel hoisted into place

By: Jesse Martinez
EL PASO, Texas The final piece of steel was hoisted into place at the new triple-a baseball park in downtown El Paso.

The city, the Chihuahuas baseball team and the construction crew celebrated the milestone with a topping off ceremony Monday morning.

Since construction began last year, 2.6 million tons of steel was hoisted, positioned and bolted into place at the new ballpark.

I think it makes it real for everyone who maybe hasn't driven down here in a few weeks. I mean, this ballpark is now at a point where it's making daily progress to the eye. I mean, you can come by here and see different things that have taken place, said Brad Taylor, the teams general manager.

Construction managers said the project remains on schedule and should be ready to welcome baseball fans when the El Paso Chihuahuas play their first home game in April.
