Pedestrian dies from injuries after accident in Lower Valley

By: Elena Arteaga

EL PASO, Texas-- An El Paso woman has died from injuries sustained during an accident Monday evening, in El Paso's Lower Valley.

El Paso police said the accident happened at 7:14 P.M. at McElroy and Alameda.

Police said Carolina Melendez, 58, was crossing Alameda when she was hit by a red 1999 Ford Escort being driven by 50-year-old Juan Palomino. Melendez was not in a crosswalk at the time of the accident, and failed to yield to vehicles.

She was rushed to Del Sol Medical Center, where she later died. There were no injuries reported to the occupants of the Ford Escort.

The police department's Special Traffic Investigation unit was called out to the scene of the accident shortly after the accident.

STI believes alcohol may have been a contributing factor on the part of the pedestrian. They are awaiting toxicology results.
