Irvin High Cheer Team Heads to Nationals
By: Ruben Veloz
EL PASO, Texas--It was a joyous send off for members of the Irvin High School cheer team as they hopped on a bus headed to Dallas.
The team left shortly after 2 a.m. Friday morning to compete in this years nationals Friday morning on a bus to Dallas.
"Feels amazing, like a dream come true, said Irvin High School freshman Tatiana Williams.
Its the team's first time competing at this level.
Williams said she never imagined she would be part of something this big.
"It's a real big accomplishment, because when you think of Irvin high school you don't think of champions, said Williams.
As KFOX14 first reported, the squad almost didn't make it to the competition.
"We barely found out that we are going today like at five in the afternoon, and now we are here at 2 o'clock in the morning, said Yanez.
The team needed to raise more than $5,000 to register in the competition in less than two days.
Thanks to borderland residents, they were able to go, but it was also thanks to their competitors more than three miles away at Andress High school, that the cheer team was able to complete their goal.
This is because the Andress high cheer team pitched in to help Irvin get to Dallas Friday morning.
"I am very excited for them; the work that it's taken to get us here is so worth it, said varsity cheer coach Crystal Guerrero.
Guerrero tells KFOX14 the support was amazing.
"I cannot believe how much people care about us and our kids, I've had people from all over all parts of El Paso donate, call."
"We've had so many donations, and so many people support us and they really want us to do good, said Williams.
The team will be competing tomorrow, but the squad still needs your help to pay for the buses which was loaned by the school.
