Opening this Summer: New Insights Science Center
By: Chrisdyann Uribe
EL PASO, Texas - Plans are underway to bring back the Insights Museum, which was demolished to make way for the new baseball stadium.
It has been renamed Insights Science Center and will be relocated at the Alamo School building, in south El Paso.
The center is expected to open in June or July.
The concept behind the science center is that you are able to come in and interact with the exhibits. Youre able to play with them, to touch them, to feel them, to be part of them, said Manuel Colorado, president of the board of directors at Insights Science Center.
Many of the classic exhibits from the previous location will be present, such as the tornado simulation and dinosaur exhibit.
New showcases will be presented, such as a natural disaster exhibit that shows whats it like to be present during an earthquake, tornado or flooding.
New projects among the others will include a train exhibit, the Danny Olivas space suit, and an iron lung -- one of 13 in the world -- obtained through the Medical Society.
Were excited about the new and old, right? The old exhibits were going to ramp up; were going to fix them. Were going to try and get them to become interactive. Theres the natural disaster exhibit, where you can go in and actually feel that youre in an earthquake, said Colorado.
When directors for the center decided to move to the Alamo School, it came with its own set of problems.
The challenge is there with a building that has been declared historic, Colorado said.
Renovations to the historic building require electric and plumbing work, among other projects.
The Science Center is accepting donations from the community. Donations can be made at http://www.insightselpaso.org.
