Las Cruces board backs alternative to state test

LAS CRUCES, N.M. (AP) Las Cruces' school board wants students to have an alternate path to graduate from high school without having to pass the state standardized test.

The Las Cruces Sun-News reports that the alternate is intended to allow students to get a diploma even if they fail sections of the state test.

The alternative approved unanimously by the Las Cruces school board Tuesday night is based on a combination of criteria.

Those criteria include grade point averages, final exam grades, portfolios and work and extracurricular experience.
