Former Socorro police officers under investigation had charges dropped

By: Jesse Martinez
EL PASO, Texas Two former Socorro police officers that were facing official oppression, perjury and tempering charges had them dropped.

Sgt. Refugio Orta and Officer Israel Delgado were originally charged after Texas Rangers and state troopers raided a Socorro police substation in October 2012.

A spokesperson from the El Paso District Attorneys Office said Thursday that based on the evidence, prosecutors decided to drop the charges.

Despite that, Socorro police officials said there are no plans to reinstate either of the two men.

Socorro Mayor Jesus Ruiz released the following statement:

The City of Socorro is aware that charges were dropped for two of our former police officers. These officers were terminated during the summer in a joint decision by our City Manager and our former Interim Police Chief. There were no plans to reinstate the former officers if their legal cases were resolved. The Police Department had conducted internal investigations and the results were another reason for their termination. The former officers appealed the termination and their appeals will be heard by our Civil Service Commission. The Civil Service Commission will decide whether or not they will be reinstated. The City of Socorro will only reinstate the former officers if the Civil Service Commission approves their appeal.
