Deputies seeking key witness in Dona Ana County home invasion
By: Jesse Martinez
DONA ANA COUNTY, N.M. Two weeks after the New Year's Day home invasion that received national attention, deputies said they are trying to locate a key witness.
As KFOX14 previously reported, police said Sal Garces, Raymond Garces, Leonard Calvillo and Nathan Avalos broke into the home of Las Cruces MMA fighter Joe Torrez some time after getting into an argument.
Torrez lived there with his fiance and young son. When deputies arrived, one man was found seriously injured and later died, while another was hospitalized. The three surviving men were arrested and face several charges.
Now, deputies said they are trying to find another man who was questioned and released at the scene and who appears to be eluding authorities.
Officials believe Victor Orquiz, 19, was the driver of a white car that was parked in the driveway of Torrez's home.
Orquiz, who was identified as Torrez's brother, has not answered any calls from investigators, officials said.
Deputies are looking for Orquiz and a red, four-door Chevrolet sedan that was seen leaving Torrez's neighborhood with a male and female inside the vehicle.
Anyone with information on this case is asked to call the Dona Ana County Sheriff's Office at 575-525-8806.
