Family-owned downtown shop to close after 87 years

By: Jesse Martinez
EL PASO, Texas A symbol of downtown El Paso is closing its doors for good.

La Libertad opened about 87 years ago, and Dorene Naparstek says she and her daughter are ready to close up shop.

Her husband Martin Naparstek took over the store when he was 19 up until he died two years ago at the age of 84.

Naparstek says she and her daughter have run the store seven days a week for the last two years.

We hung in there. It hurts to leave, but I want to thank all the people who have been so loyal to us and have come and have been to our store. It has meant everything in the world, Naparstek says.

She says there are several reasons for the store closing, but the No. 1 is because Naparstek would like to retire.

La Libertad, also known as Liberty Army Supply, is located at 312 S. El Paso St. The store will be closing on Friday.
