New soccer fields coming to Shawver Park

By: Stacey Welsh
EL PASO, Texas -- Two new soccer fields are set to open at Shawver Park in April. The El Paso Parks and Recreation Department said the fields are part of the city's Park Pond Improvements.

"It's a dual-use facility that is used as a ponding area when rain comes, and then we also use it for recreational use," Sports Manager Paula Powell said.

The fields are designed to prevent flooding in nearby neighborhoods.

Powell said the money for these projects comes from 10 percent of stormwater fees from El Paso Water Utilities. Powell said there are Park Pond projects going on all over the city.

Some Lower Valley residents said they are excited about the possibility for more youth sports at Shawver Park.

"I think it's a really good idea. It gives more activities to do outside, especially with the technology that we have nowadays. Most of the kids stay inside and watch TV or play video games and things like that," Lower Valley resident Airam Huntsman said.

"Two of my older kids still play soccer. They've played since they were little, so I totally agree," Lower Valley resident Gabby Garcia said.

Powell said Capistrano Park will get a new baseball field as part of the Park Pond Improvements this year.

Plans for landscaping improvements are also in the works for Shawver Park this year, and that could include new park lights. Powell said the Quality of Life Bonds would fund those improvements.
