Area hospitals in need of blood donations
By: Jesse Martinez
EL PASO, Texas Local hospitals are in need of blood, and the United Blood Services is asking for the public's help to meet demands.
January is National Volunteer Blood Donor Month, and UBS officials said this month is typically challenging to recruit people to give blood.
"There are so many unpredictable factors at play that can affect the blood supply during January. It's a critical time to remind the public of the need for more donors, said LuAnn Wieland, communications manager for United Blood Services Rio Grande region. "If you are in good health, please come into our centers and donate today, with our without an appointment."
The weather, holiday schedules and increased flue symptoms can keep blood donors away, UBS officials said.
Hospitals in El Paso and Las Cruces need about 200 pints of blood a day to meet the needs of the 19 local hospitals, but UBS officials said currently all blood types are needed as there is a large dip in donations.
Officials said those who donate blood during January are entered in a drawing for a $500 Best Buy gift card.
