Parking lots closed during Sun Bowl
By: Melissa Gundersen
EL PASO, Texas -- Around 50,000 people are expected to pack into the University of Texas at El Paso's football stadium Tuesday for the 80th annual Sun Bowl and one worry on many people's minds is parking.
Two parking lots will be completely closed due to construction, and a third lot will be closed and relocated to the opposite side of campus.
The two lots on Sun Bowl Drive across from the stadium, which are usually allocated for only cars during the Sun Bowl game, will be closed.
Another lot on Schuster Avenue near the roundabout, which is usually the RV parking area, is also closed.
RVs will be able to park in a lot on Mesa Street near Cobo Joe's.
"We always have shuttles, but this year, we've doubled the shuttles because of the parking situation," said Bernie Olivas, Sun Bowl Association.
With more shuttles, seven pick-up and drop-off locations will be open for drivers.
"It will not take you any longer to get there if you park from any parking lot," said Olivas.
Regardless of how many shuttles there are, coordinators and UTEP students have one recommendation for everyone.
"Just get here as early as you can," said student Sofia Reyes.
Reyes has been parking in the UTEP lots for the past four years and said it's always a pain.
"Sometimes you don't even know if your lot is going to fill up or not, so even if you get a parking pass you're pretty much screwed," said Reyes.
Reyes said parking is even worse when there's an event, like the Sun Bowl.
"That's a pain," said Reyes.
Along with closed lots, some areas will be reserved parking only.
Parking passes may be purchased until Dec. 30 through the Sun Bowl Association. RV parking passes are $20 and vehicle parking passes are $10.
To purchase passes, visit the Sun Bowl Association office at 4150 Pinnacle St. Suite 100 or call 915-533-4416.
