Family of hit-and-run victim: 'Thank you for answering our prayers'

By: Jesse Martinez and Crystal Price
EL PASO, Texas - An arrest was made in the case of a car accident that killed an 18-year-old pregnant woman and her prematurely delivered child.

As KFOX14 previously reported, Alma Reaux was in an altercation with the driver of an SUV when she was hit by the vehicle on Nov. 19 in the 200 block of California Avenue.

She was taken to University Medical Center where she died that evening along with her 13-week-old fetus, police said.

The police department's investigation revealed that the incident was not a hit-and-run case as it was originally reported.

According to police, Reaux met with Ruben Cazares, 38, for an illegal drug transaction, and as an altercation ensued, Cazares ran over Reaux.

However, Reaux's sister, Alvina Reaux, said she does not believe her sister would ever be involved in drugs of any kind.

"She had a good head on her shoulders, so I don't understand why it would be over that, Alvina Reaux said. "She would know better."

Alvina Reaux recalls the close relationship she had with her sister, Alma.

"She was more than just my sister and she was more than a best friend, Alvina Reaux said. "I can't even describe how much she meant to me."

Although many questions are left unanswered, Alvina Reaux said she is just happy to see someone held accountable for her sister's death.

"When they called us today, I was like thank you so much for helping us and answering our prayers," Alvina Reaux said.

Though prayers have been answered, she said it will never completely make up for what happened to her sister.

"I just don't know what to say anymore because she's never coming back, Alvina Reaux said.

Cazares was charged with two counts of murder as well as two drug possession charged. He was booked into the El Paso County Jail on Monday with bail totaling $1.1 million.
