Donations still needed after the holidays
By: Ruben Veloz
EL PASO,Texas--The holidays may almost be over, but that doesn't mean you still can't help.
Once the holidays end, people tend to forget that donations are still needed around the borderland.
The Salvation Army is one organization that helps many people struggling to put a roof over their heads; however there are still some items they need to keep their shelter running.
"There are tough times here and there but we are staying positive," said Maria Martinez.
She and her two children have been staying at the Salvation Army's family shelter after losing some of her family members.
Martinez says Christmas would have been really tough if it wasn't for the Salvation Army.
"They've helped a lot. If it wasn't for the Salvation Army, I don't think they would have received too much this year."
Right now there are more than 120 people staying at the shelter, but that number fluctuates daily.
"We help them learn how to budget, so they can get out on the real world and either rent a house, buy a house, all kinds of things that will help them get back on their feet," said Salvation Army Sgt. Armando Acosta.
Currently there are 30 families who are receiving help.
Acosta says they wouldn't be able to do it without the public's help.
This holiday, The Salvation Army has been able to raise more than $250,000 from local donations.
Acosta told KFOX14 even though the holidays are almost over; they still need a lot of help.
"We are always in need of gently used clothes, blankets, jackets, canned goods, food, toys, and of course if you can give a monetary donation that would be pretty awesome as well."
The Salvation Army is open 24/7, 365 days a year.
Martinez said if it wasn't for their help, she wouldn't be able to get back on her feet.
"I'm very appreciative and grateful that they are helping," said Martinez.
The Salvation Army also provides clothes and meals daily.
