80th Sun Bowl expected to bring in more revenue than 2012
By: Bill Melugin
EL PASO, Texas -- When the University of California, Los Angeles and Virginia Tech go to battle with each other on New Year's Eve, local businesses and hotels are expecting big profits.
The 2012 Sun Bowl didn't bring as many hotel bookings as usual, most likely because it was Georgia Tech's second year in a row in the game.
This year the Sun Bowl features two upper tier teams from the Pac-12 and Atlantic Coast Conference.
"I know that it's one of the busiest nights of the year for us, it's where you make your money, including the bartenders, andservers and the restaurant," said Juan Muro, a bartender at Cincinnati, just a short walk away from the Sun Bowl. "It's chaotic, it's wall to wall people in here, what we like is that all the hotels around here tell people to come to the Cincinnati district because there's so many bars and so many restaurants to visit and people love it."
Muro told KFOX14 the bar doesn't even have to advertise for the Sun Bowl.
"You don't have specials on Friday night, because people already go out on Friday night, and the Sun Bowl is here and it's already advertised for you," Muro said. "UCLA will be a draw for sure, and Virginia Tech -- they probably haven't seen anything like this where they're from -- so I think they'll be coming back to visit."
