By: Jamel Valencia
LAS CRUCES, N.M. - Roommates of a man suspected of setting fire to their home, claim there was threats made before about burning down their place.
Monday morning the Las Cruces Fire Department was called out a mobile home fire at 1338 Lynx Trail around 1 a.m.
When they arrived they found the home fully engulfed in flames. It was later determined by investigators that the home was destroyed in the fire.
Fire and police investigators gathered information from Anthony Garret Madison whose home was destroyed.
According to them, Madison told them he stacked books as logs in the fireplace, and set them aflame before falling asleep. Madison claimed he woke up at 1 a.m. but did not notice any heat or flames in the living room before going outside to smoke a cigarette.
Then he told investigators when he walked out to the front door, he realized that he did not have a lighter to start his cigarette. So he turned around and went back inside where he was overcome by heavy smoke.
Investigators said Madison's statements were inconsistent, and had that happened Madison could have died while asleep.
Then investigators found out from two other tenants of the mobile home that they recently had trouble with Madison who had reportedly threatened to burn down the home.
Madison was booked into the Dona Ana County Detention Center with bond set at $15,000.
He was charged with one count of negligent arson, a fourth-degree felony.
