Las Cruces High beats Mayfield in state championship game

LAS CRUCES, N.M. -- It's been voted the biggest rivalry in the state of New Mexico and one that's gone on more than 40 years.
Saturday, Las Cruces High versus Mayfield High took to the gridiron for a match up that didn't disappoint.
The brutal cold didn't stop around 27,000 fans from packing Aggie Memorial Stadium Saturday.
"There's a lot of people. Not even the college games get like this," said one fan.
"This is the best football game in the city, can't get no any better than this.this," said another spectator.
The two long-time rivals duked it out in the 5A state championship.
"It's awesome, because you don't really hear much Las Cruces or New Mexico, or anything here really," said fan Adrienne Moreno.
Die-hard fans came prepared. Some bundled in blankets, others layered up. "I have three undershirts, long sleeves, a scarf, a beanie, boots and double socks," said Claudia Loza, another fan.
The game itself didn't disappoint, keeping fans on their toes much of the time.
With less than two minutes left, Mayfield went to make an extra point, but Las Cruces blocked the play.
The Bulldawgs won the game 27-26 and walked away with the title for the second year in a row.
"It's awesome. It's about the kids and the kids just came to play. I'll take it," said LCHS head coach Jim Miller.
"Just to be a part of it it, it's the best feeling I've ever had in my entire life," said JR Hernandez, player JR Hernandez.
