Former ASU baseball coach, Triple-A manager signed to Chihuahuas
By: Jesse Martinez
EL PASO, Texas El Paso's Triple-A baseball team has its first manager.
As the Tucson Padres prepare for its move to the Sun City to be a part of the El Paso Chihuahuas, Pat Murphy, a manager from another San Diego Padres Triple-A affiliate, is joining them.
"It is a great privilege to be part of a new beginning in El Paso professional baseball," Murphy said. "I am really excited for the season and look forward to getting to know the El Paso community. It is a wonderful opportunity."
Murphy was first hired by the San Diego Padres in 2010 as a special assistant to baseball operations, and was later named the manager of the San Diego Padres' Northwest League affiliate the Eugene Emeralds from 2011 to 2012.
Before his run with the Padres and its affiliates, Murphy was the head baseball coach at Arizona State University, where he won four Pac-10 championships in 2000 and from 2007-2009.
Murphy accumulated 1,000 career wins before age 50, something only two other coaches have accomplished.
"The El Paso Chihuahuas are fortunate to have a proven winner like Pat Murphy as the first manager in team history," said Chihuahuas General Manager Brad Taylor. "Pat's commitment and understanding of the team's role in our community is also a huge asset."
Murphy will be a part of the El Paso Chihuahuas' inaugural season in 2014.
