Several homeowners in same area say they were scammed out of thousands by contractor

By: Gina Benitez
EL PASO, Texas -- Several people come to KFOX 14 saying a contractor started work on their home, then took the money without finishing the job.

"It took me a whole year and a half to come up with $1,500 for the door," said Elsa Apodaca.

Fifteen hundred dollars is what she said paid to contractor Ramon Zuniga to install a door in July.

"He didn't install it correctly, period. He didn't put the screws. He didn't put the thing that goes on the bottom of the door. It sticks far out," Apodaca said.

Apodaca said he promised to come back a few days later to fix his work, but Monday rolled around and she said he never showed.

"I've been calling him, over and over since July to please come. He hasn't been here. He hasn't returned my calls. The air comes in, at night it's freezing. It just upsets me and I'm not the only victim in this. There are other victims that have been coming forward," Apodaca said.

Carlos Gardea and his wife live blocks away from Apodaca.

"He kept the money and still to this day he didn't come back," Gardea said.

This couple has a similar story.

"He did the door, but like I said, it's mediocre," Gardea said.

They said they spent $2,500 total, between a door that was partially done and a gate that wasn't even started.

"We did try a bunch of times to call him, he never returned calls. If we did get an answer, it's by somebody else saying that he wasn't available and to leave a message," Gardea said.

We tried to call Zuniga today but his number had been disconnected.

His business, Escape Iron Works, doesn't show up on the Better Business Bureau's website.

We even tried tracking him down at a home a family member said he lives in.

"I ended up putting it on Facebook. I didn't know what to do, because he cannot get away with this," Gardea said.

We checked with the county attorney to see if there were any cases on Zuniga, pending or closed, and we found none.

Apodaca said she plans on opening a case against him.
