Virginia Tech's video message gets positive reaction from El Pasoans
By: Ruben Veloz
EL PASO, Texas--The teams playing in this year's 80th Hyundai Sun Bowl game are set to arrive at El Paso International airport on Thursday.
The game won't be played till next Tuesday, New Year's Eve, but the stadium is sure to be packed with fans eager to see the game.
Unlike last year, when USC fans brought with them some controversy after one of their players popped off about hating El Paso, Virgina Tech sent out a message to show the team's excitement about playing in the game.
The video message was read by Virgina Tech defensive tackle Woody Barron.
It was recorded in Spanish with English subtitles and posted on the team's website.
In it, Barron talks about the team's excitement to come and play in this year's Sun Bowl game.
The message is getting positive reaction from El Pasoans.
"It's actually really awesome, like, it's motivation for the city," said south central El Paso resident Alonzo Quintero.
Quintero tells KFOX14 he's rooting for UCLA.
"It's cool. It pumps you up," said Quintero. "They're excited to play a bowl."
Others believe the video was more of a PR stunt to grab more fans.
"They are not going to have a lot of their own supporters; they can get more supporters that way from here in the Sun City. I think it's a really good strategy," said northeast El Pasoan Pauline Calvillo.
Either way, El Pasoans tell KFOX14 they can't wait to watch the players compete this year.
"There's a lot of people that root for UCLA, but I think it won't be like how it was last year how everybody was booing once the team came on," said Quintero.
