Trailer fire leaves family in Anthony homeless
'By: Ruben Veloz
Anthony, NM A mother and her three kids were left without a home this after their trailer went up in flames.
It happened around 9:30 p.m. Wednesday near Sandia Drive and Lincoln Street, firefighters said.
Investigators tell KFOX14 the fire started in the back-yard of the trailer.
Investigators say they say the family was having a small camp fire in the back yard Wednesday evening, but instead of using water to put out the fire, they used sand instead, said investigators.
That caused some weeds to catch on fire, and then spread to the trailer, said investigators.
"This is where I live with my kids and now it's gone," said Lin Shan Padilla.
Padilla said she and her kids were about to go to bed when they noticed the flames.
"I just got my papers and get the kids safe and we ran from the trailer because we have gas tanks inside," said Padilla.
Padilla said her son saw the fire and told her about the flames.
"The fire it was very tall, and my little kid was in the last room, he was sleeping and I ran to tell him to wake up," said Padilla.
Anthony firefighters, members of the Dona Ana County Fire dept., as well as West Valley firefighters responded to the scene.
Dona Ana county fire investigators believe there wasn't enough sand covering the fire to safely put it out.
Neighbors who witnessed the scene told KFOX14 they could see a bright orange glow coming from the trailer.
"I thought it was just someone barbecuing, but then the smoke it didn't smell like anything good," said Jorge Ramirez.
Firefighters were able to get the fire under control within 15 minutes.
Padilla and her three kids were able to go back inside after firefighters left, but said everything was destroyed.
"I thank God we are together and things happen and I just thank god we are safe," said Padilla.
The family was able to stay at a hotel for the night, thanks to the Red Cross.
The trailer was a total loss.
