Free turkey dinners mean more than a Thanksgiving meal
By: Stephanie Guadian
EL PASO, Texas - Bundled up in her warmest clothes -- plus a quilt--- Linda Acosta, her sister and 5-year-old granddaughter stood and shivered in 30-degree weather. They were not the only ones freezing. The line at Casa de Peregrinos food bank snaked around the building. Some waited for hours.
Once inside, we got a look at what was worth the wait. Free turkeys dinners.
Lorenzo Alba is Casa's executive director.
We are giving out stuffing, corn, green beans, cream of mushroom, pies, pumpkin, cranberries and potatoes. Everything you would need for a thanksgiving meal, said Alba.
Its a holiday meal Linda and her family would not have without the food bank's help.
I just want us to be together. It doesn't matter. I'm not a greedy person. I don't want a lot. I don't, said Acosta.
The emergency food program has taken in 1,000 new clients just this year.
Linda is one of them. And right now, times are tough for her and her family.
It's because I clean houses and there aren't a lot of houses and people that pay well, said Acosta.
Low-income families often have to make some hard decisions.
They must decide if they are going pay the electric bill, whether they can buy their meds or whether they can buy baby food, said Alba.
Donations help keep the shelves stocked at Casa de Peregrinos.
And it was volunteers who lined up to pass out some 1,200 turkey dinners.
A show of generosity, Linda is not taking for granted,
I am going to go home and thank god. I'm the type of person who lights a candle. Because, I barely made it, said Acosta.
