Ditch the crowds and shop local

EL PASO, Texas -- A lot of shoppers plan on hitting the mall this Thursday and Friday on the hunt for some good deals, but others say they're ditching the crowds and keeping it local.
There's Brown Thursday, Black Friday and now "Shop Small Saturday."
"We open at 11 o'clock on Saturday and we'll be having little treats for our customers cookies, and there will be mimosas. We'll also be doing a surprise discount," said Mariel Galbiati, owner of Fig.
Fig is a boutique in west El Paso filled with distinctive home dcor items and other small accessories.
"You can't get dishware like this anywhere else in town," said Galbiati as she organized a display of white and gold dishes.
Galbiati said she hopes to draw in a lot of new customers this Saturday.
"The customer gets to choose from a little box their discount for their purchase that they're making in the store. It'll range between 10 percent to even 50 percent. So that lucky person who gets the 50 percent will have a good little thing going on," said Galbiati.
She's not the only one jumping on the bandwagon this year. In downtown El Paso, Manchot is slashing prices.
"We are doing BOGO 50 percent. So the whole store, you buy something and the second item is 50 percent off," said owner Norma Barrera.
It's something some businesses, like Trend Society and Luka 7, have done for years. Staff members said it really works.
"There's a lot more rush and more people are shopping," said Sofia Carbonell, the manager at Luka 7.
It's part of a national campaign sponsored by American Express. The El Paso Chamber of Commerce is urging all small business owners to get involved by handing out "shop small" bags, pens and banners.
Owners stressed how important this campaign is for the area.
"I have a kid, so it all goes to his soccer practices and his school and his stuff like that so it's money that stays in the community," said Barrera.
Some small businesses will start offering deals on Friday. In fact, deals will be better on Friday at shops such as Trend Society and Luka 7. Most small businesses have either a website or Facebook page where you can check out the deals.
