Former assistant district attorney accused of bribery pleads not guilty
EL PASO, Texas - A former El Paso assistant district attorney who was arrested earlier this week on charges of conspiring to accept bribes to dismiss criminal cases two years ago pleaded not guilty Friday.
Antonio Reyes, 34, was handcuffed Tuesday morning on a federal grand jury indictment charging him with conspiracy to commit wire fraud and deprivation of honest services, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.
The indictment alleges that from March 30, 2011, until April 15, 2011, Reyes conspired with others through text messaging to accept cash bribes in exchange for dismissing pending criminal cases.
Reyes is scheduled to appear in court on Dec. 19 before U.S. District Judge Kathleen Cardone.
If Reyes is found guilty, he faces up to 20 years in prison.
