Ruidoso businesses expected to boom as Ski Apache opens

By: Crystal Price
RUIDOSO, N.M. -- The opening day at Ski Apache resort brought in big business to Ruidoso this Thanksgiving.

Hotels in the Ruidoso tell KFOX14 they've seen an increase in walk-in guests this Thanksgiving.

"The ski area is one of the anchors of the economy, along with the casino and the track is still important," said Jerry Green, a tourist from Colorado.

Beth Steiner owns Heart Delight, a kitchen store in downtown Ruidoso.

Steiner said a majority of her business comes from tourists.

"Probably over 80 percent I would say," Steiner said.

Steiner said her store took a hit last year when Ski Apache delayed its season by three weeks.

"We are a tourist town and that's what we thrive on," Steiner said.

But with the resort opening on time this year, she is hopeful it will bring in more bucks.

"That's what we pray for is that they'll come here to this beautiful place and not other places," Steiner said. "On our whole mile-long tourist section, we want those people to come and see us. We really depend on that."
