Alamogordo man tried to smuggle 200 pounds of marijuana, officials say

By: Jesse Martinez
EL PASO, Texas More than $170,000 worth of marijuana was seized at a border crossing Tuesday night.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials said a 2000 Dodge Dakota entered the port of entry around 6:30 p.m.

The driver appeared to be nervous, which prompted officers to further inspect the vehicle, officials said.

After an X-ray scan, a drug-sniffing dog led officers to the truck's side panels, where they found 127 marijuana-filled bundles in the truck's walls, officials said.

The drugs weighed about 222 pounds and have an estimated street value of $177,600.

"Officer expertise, technology and canine support all played a role in this seizure," said CBP El Paso Port Director Hector Mancha. "Layered enforcement is an important element in our ability to identify and stop threats we encounter at the border."

The driver, 43-year-old Hector Palma Alvidrez of Alamogordo, was arrested.
