Friends of pregnant woman brutally attacked hold fundraiser
By: Gina Benitez
EL PASO, Texas- Friends of a woman brutally attacked this week while she was pregnant held a fundraiser in her honor.
Though her road to recovery has begun, friends say she still has a long way to go.
"She has a very long road to recovery, unfortunately," said Angi Gooden, a friend of Rachel Poole.
Gooden said Rachel Poole wasn't just her friend.
She was more like a sister.
"Her husband was deployed and she would tell me everything just to keep her sanity. And she helped me through really really hard times," Gooden said.
As we reported, Poole was brutally attacked in her home on Wednesday.
An arrest affidavit KFOX 14 obtained pinned Corey Moss as her attacker.
Police say Moss hid in Poole's home to confront her about money he owed her, knocked her to the ground, then stabbed her multiple times while she was nine months pregnant. This all happened as her husband, a Fort Bliss soldier, watched through Facetime, a popular video chat application,
"We're not letting bad news stop us. We're not letting bad people stop us. We're not letting unfortunate events like these stop us," Gooden said.
Gooden and several other Army spouses came together to collect donations for the family.
"Anything that would be able to help them where they wouldn't have too much about expenses cause you know, they got that taken care of," Gooden said.
Luckily, Poole's baby survived the attack and was born healthy.
Poole however, is still in the hospital.
"She tried to walk this morning but she wasn't able to. She's a fighter and I know that she just needs a little bit more time and she'll get right back to where she was before," Gooden said.
Gooden said she may be down now.
"She's scared. She's scared and she has a right to be. She doesn't understand yet. And that's gonna take time," Gooden said.
But Poole's spirit is still strong.
"She was strong when I was weak. And that's basically how she always is and that's how everybody sees her. So now that she's in the hospital and she's weak herself, I'm gonna make sure that I'm strong for her," Gooden said.
Friends plan to hold another fundraiser tomorrow also in the parking lot behind the Walgreens on Montana and Yarbrough.
