Socorro City Council candidates plan for flood prevention

By: Stacey Welsh

SOCORRO, Texas -- Current Socorro District 1 City Council Member Maria Reyes, former Socorro Representative at Large Sergio Cox and local business owner Velia Herrera are running for the Socorro District 1 City Council seat.

The hardest hit areas from flooding nearly two months ago are in District 1, including Coker Road. Dorothy Turner lives there, and said she and her family have been cleaning out more than 15 truckloads of dirt since the floods hit. Turner said help for flood cleanup can't come soon enough.

"There's a reason why we always vote for the people that we vote for. We're hoping that it turns out better for the city. If we vote for them, they should show us that we're going to do good," Turner said.

All three candidates said flood clean up cleanup will be their No. 1 priority.

Herrera said she wants to make sure the City Council approves projects to prevent future flooding.

"That should have been addressed and taken care of ever since the city started," Herrera said.
In addition to flood cleanup, Cox said he would want to improve street conditions.

"District No. 1 still has the higher number of streets in the city of Socorro that have not been paved for the first time," Cox said.

Reyes said she would also want to continue making positive changes to city government after former council members extended their terms unlawfully in the past.

"I got very much involved in trying to change the council to try to be more transparent and have people involvement," Reyes said.
