The Real Housewife of Juarez
By: Stephanie Guadian
Emily Bonderer-Cruz is a woman from Kansas City, Mo., who fell in love -- and married a man from Mexico who was in the U.S. illegally.
When she realized her husband, Ray, was ineligible to apply for legal status until 2020, the couple packed up their lives and moved south of the border. The year was 2010, and Juarez was known as the most dangerous city in the world.
That same year, Emily started a blog called the Real Housewife of Juarez. At first, she just wanted to stay in contact with her family and friends.
Anytime there was a murder in Juarez, everyone would be calling me saying were you there? Are you OK? And, I would have to be like Juarez is a really big city. I'm not at every party, said Emily Bonderer-Cruz.
Still, Emily and Ray were not untouched by the violence. In one blog entry titled Too Sad for Witty Titles -- she describes the pain of finding out her husband's best friend had just been murdered.
The blog allows her to express her feelings- and connect with other American wives who share a similar story.
Juarez is not a ghost town. People go out and people have families. People go to school and people work. People are living their lives regardless of the drug war, said Bonderer-Cruz.
Many of her blogs are about everyday stuff - waiting in line with other commuters at the Bridge of the Americas to cross the border for a job in El Paso, the search for a perfect burrito and shopping for shoes.
But somewhere in between the lines -- Emily hopes her blog will inspire others to realize what she did.
I don't have to keep living in the shadows in the United States with my undocumented spouse or my undocumented family member. People can actually see there is a way to make a life here on the border, said Bonderer-Cruz.
