Details of Fabens SWAT situation revealed
FABENS, Texas - Sheriff investigators release details of what happened during a traffic stop that turned deadly Tuesday.
George Reese Lutich barricaded himself in his Fabens home after being accused of shooting at an El Paso County sheriff's deputy and killed himself, El Paso County Sheriff's deputies said.
It started at about 11:40 a.m. when a deputy pulled over an SUV on the 18000 block of Middle Island Road.
The driver, Angela Marasovich, was given a citation and was signing the ticket outside of the SUV when Lutich according to investigators got out of the vehicle and fired a single shot from a handgun at the deputy.
According to the investigation, the deputy fired back no injuries were reported.
Marasovich and Lutich got back into the SUV and headed toward Lutich's home at 17901 Middle Island Road.
When they arrived Lutich armed with a rifle, pointed the weapon at law enforcement officers who followed them to the house, said a sheriff's official.
Marasovich and Lutich were able to get inside the home. Around 1 p.m. negotiators spoke with Lutich and Marasovich, but refused to come out.
According to investigators a "distraction device" was used to get the two out Marasovich came out, but not Lutich.
When officials went inside they found Lutich with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Several additional agencies responded; SWAT team, the Crisis Negotiations Team, the Criminal Investigation Division and the Sheriff's Office Strike Team. The United States Border Patrol air support unit, several United States Border Patrol Agents, Customs and Border Protection officers, and Clint PD Officers.
