LAS CRUCES, N.M. -- As KFOX14 previously reported, Matthew Montes allegedly choked and placed the kitten in scalding hot water.
According to police documents, Montes, 25, admitted to his girlfriend that he penetrated the cat's vagina and rectum with sticks and that he killed cats in his childhood.
"Our office will continue to fight tirelessly and be a voice for those that can't speak for themselves. Animals are certainly no exception," said District Attorney Mark D'Antonio.
Montes is still being held at the Dona Ana County Detention Center on a $50,000 secured bond.
Officials said more than 30 animal activists attended the arraignment to protest animal cruelty.
