El Paso's first toll lanes to open soon

By: Genevieve Curtis

EL PASO, Texas- El Paso drivers will soon have options for quicker commutes and less congestion.

It's one of the busiest times of the year for El Paso roadways, but in a few weeks there will be some relief when the toll lane along the border highway opens.

Construction is almost complete on the toll lanes which should open by either the end of the year or January.

The nine-mile stretch from US-54 to Zaragoza Road features one designated toll lane in each direction and for 10 cents per mile you can speed up your daily commute.

The toll lanes hope to alleviate some of the congestion that constantly happens on 1-10.

The Camino Real Regional Mobility Authority is encouraging people to get a sticker, which is tied to an account and behaves like a prepaid credit card, every time a driver passes through, it'll take the 10 cents off.

Otherwise if drivers go through the toll without one, they'll take a picture of your license plate and send you a bill in the mail.

All the money levied from the tolls stays here in El Paso.

"The revenues generated off of the toll road can only be spent on transportation projects in El Paso," said Raymond Telles, executive director of Camino Real Regional Mobility Authority

The toll tags offered can also be used in all other Texas tollways in cities like Dallas, Houston and Austin.
