UTEP to recycle rocks from Sun Bowl Drive Project
EL PASO, Texas-- TXDOT has begun hammering the mountain for the widening of the Sun Bowl Drive Project. The leftover pieces will be put to use on other projects.
The rocks that were once part of the mountain will be recycled to create plant life. They will be used for beautification projects on the UTEP campus helping desert plants grow.
"This is exactly the kind of rock that we need so the timing has been perfect for that, says Greg McNicol, associate vice president for facilities services.
UTEP will also recycle them for other purposes.
"The rock is being used to stabilize some of the parking lots being used here. The parking lot P-6, for example, will use the larger rock to stabilize the ground there. We're keeping them all on campus, McNicol said.
Students we spoke with are excited about the projects.
"You know it's just the nature of UTEP. We are always looking for ways to save money whether it's energy, whether it's a way to recycle material, a proud McNicol explains.
The Sun Bowl Widening Project is a 10-month project that will include two lanes going in each direction, bike lanes, sidewalks and better lighting.
