More than 200 veterans land interviews at veteran job fair
By Crystal Price EL PASO, Texas -- Hundreds of veterans packed the El Paso County Coliseum on Thursday for the Red White & You job fair for veterans.
More than 200 veteran job-seekers landed interviews at Thursday's Red White and You job fair.
Almost 100 companies in health, construction, transportation and many other industries were on hand to accept resumes and help veterans apply for jobs.
The Red White & You campaign is a statewide event aimed at hiring 1.7 million veterans in Texas.
The jobless rate for post-9/11 veterans is 10 percent nationwide.
Twenty-six-year-old Kevin Dearman of El Paso still unemployed after leaving the Navy more than a year ago.
"I thought it was going to be easy, but they warn you before you get out that it's not what you think," Dearman said.
However, he was able to land a job interview at the job fair on Thursday.
"I think this is a great thing," Dearman said. "There is a lot of people here, some people are still in, this is the only time I actually feel like I have a chance of getting a job. I wish they had it every month."
Ranstad site manager Becky Rider worked all day helping veterans fill out job applications.
Rider said she can relate to their situation, as 15 years ago she was a 20-something Air Force veteran seeking work, too.
"I do believe that once they're out of the military, they should absolutely have the opportunity because they have a lot of skill sets," Rider said.
According to the Texas Workforce Commission, 1,148 veterans attended Thursday's job fair.
Four of those who attended landed a job on the spot.
