San Elizario residents vote to incorporate, according to unofficial results

SAN ELIZARIO, Texas -- Residents voted to incorporate San Elizario into a city by a landslide, according to unofficial results.
With all of the precincts reporting, about 88 percent of votes were in favor of the incorporation, according to unofficial results.
San Elizario Incorporation Efforts Group President Maya Sanchez said incorporation will protect the community's identity.
This incorporation effort comes after a state judge overturned Socorro's decision to annex parts of San Eli earlier this year. The San Elizario Incorporation Efforts Group has been educating registered voters on why it feels San Eli should incorporate.
Those in favor expect incorporation to save San Eli from future annexation threats.
Despite this, some said they are worried incorporation could come with higher taxes and city regulations.
"There would be permits for the water, for the gas. A lot of regulations, even for the people who live in the mobile homes," San Eli resident Maria Covernali said.
Some residents also expect more businesses to come to San Eli if incorporated.
"People will probably come here more often and probably make more money for this town," San Eli resident Jose Acosta said.
While taxes could go up for San Eli if incorporation happens, El Paso County Commissioner Vince Perez said more taxes could mean more services, including new police and fire departments.
Sanchez said the next step for San Eli is to elect a mayor and City Council. The city will request an election from the El Paso County judge. Sanchez expects an election to happen in May, and the public would elect a mayor and five council people.
Perez said once the county certifies the election results, San Elizario will be the newest city in Texas.
