Update: El Paso boy with artificial heart dies
By: Jesse Martinez
EL PASO, Texas -- An El Paso boy who was the first child to receive an artificial heart has died, according to family members.
Matthew Olivas Jr., 9, was born with a heart condition called Ebstein's anomaly, which is a deformation of the heart.
After complications from valve-replacement surgery in October, his family started the artificial heart process and put him on a Syncardia Machine.
Had Matthew survived, the next step in his treatment would have been getting a heart transplant.
Matthew's family is asking everyone to celebrate his life at his services next week by wearing red, which was his favorite color.
Visitation for Matthew will be from 4 to 9 p.m. at Mount Carmel Funeral Home at 1755 Zaragoza Road. Mass will be held at1 p.m. at Corpus Christi Church at 9205 North Loop Drive.
Donations can be made to the Matthew Olivas Jr. Fund at Wells Fargo or online at www.lionheartstrong.com. All proceeds will go toward celebration costs and the remaining funds will go to a family in Dallas awaiting a heart transplant.
