Tornillo ISD removes interim superintendent from position
By: Gina Benitez
A local school district has terminated its interim superintendent.
The Tornillo ISD board of trustees voted Monday night to terminate Margaret Ruybe, the woman who's been at the helm of the district for nearly a year.
KFOX 14 crews were the only members of the media at the meeting.
"This was not a disciplinary issue or anything. It was just necessary to give her a break," said Javier Escalante, Tornillo ISD board president.
The Tornillo ISD Board of Trustees called a special meeting Monday night.
After about 20 minutes in executive session, they decided to remove Rubye from her position.
"We're all mighty grateful to her. She pulled us out of the gutter while we were down there and she did a terrific job," Ruybe said.
Ruybe is also the principal of Tornillo High and had been doing double duty for the district for the last 11 months.
The board president told KFOX 14 she was run down.
As we've reported, Tornillo's former superintendent Paul Vranish was put on leave in November of last year after TEA findings showed questionable reimbursements to he and his wife, also a district employee.
Vranish's resignation was officially accepted last December.
"You know we're happy, we're ready, to move forward and I know this is transitional from what I hear but we're happy," said Blanca Cruz, the district's business manager.
Since then, the district has been on a search for the perfect person to put at the helm, but they've run into some issues.
"We had contacted Region 19 but some of the board members were not happy with the results that we had." Escalante said.
It's also waiting on the results of a forensic audit into the district.
Trustees appointed Dr. Mike Quatrini tonight as the district's new interim superintendent.
"I feel very good. I'm from the Valley, I've been working in the Valley for over 30 years and I've been retired now for 2 years after being in San Elizario as superintendent for 15 years," Quatrini said.
Quatrini said as far as he can tell, the schools are doing well and finances are sound.
But until he really gets his feet wet, feels there's not much more he can say.
"I mean, this was a big old mess. And we started in and thank God we got a new board in and we've been working pretty steady in conjunction with each other," Escalante said.
Ruybe's ouster as interim superintendent will not affect her position as principal of Tornillo High.
She said she's glad for the experience but is glad to be back giving her full attention to the school itself.
