Celebration of the Lights relocated to Cleveland Square

By: Jamel Valencia
EL PASO, Texas - This year the Christmas tree lighting ceremony won't be in the heart of downtown El Paso, but a few blocks away.

The annual event usually takes place at the San Jacinto Plaza, but because of the undergoing renovation at the plaza, it's been moved.

The ceremony will happen on Dec. 7 at Cleveland Square next to the History Museum.

A fabricated tree will be used instead of a real one, said event organizers.

The parade route will start on Ochoa Street and end at Texas Avenue.

The plaza has been in El Paso for more than 124 years and was in need of repairs and improvements.

The renovation project will expand the park by 10 feet on all sides and will add features like splash pads for kids so they can play in the water.

Many who work or live in the area have been coping with construction since June.

The alligators sculpture "Los Lagartos" that sits in the center of the park was taken down and shipped off to Ohio for restoration.

Event organizers said they expect a bigger turn out than 2012.
