Woman saves friend's life donating organ
By: Chrisdyann Uribe
EL PASO, Texas- For many, there are limits to what people will do even for their friends. But one woman said she will go as far as risking her life to save the life of one friend.
That woman is Mary Reese. Shes the night auditor at Candlewood Suites. She has spent most of her time checking guests in and out of the hotel.
But in about four weeks she will be checking herself out of work and into a hospital for more than a month to donate an organ.
Mary Rose says she is donating her left kidney.
Her friend of over 40 years has Polycystic Kidney Disease and is in the end stages of renal failure.
She says, I thought maybe his family, his friend someone else would be more compatible with him and then we found out just this last June that none was. Even the people that came forward were not compatible with him.
Luckily Mary learned she is compatible because she has O negative blood which is a universal donor.
"We had blood tests and a week later they told me I was compatible with him and boy we have a party. We were in Fredericksburg at the time and my husband and I were just dancing."
The surgery is scheduled to take place on November 7th the only problem is money. She needs your help to provide her friend with help because saving her friend comes with expenses. She also wont be able to work for a month after the surgery to recover.
"The travel expenses, the hotel expenses, eating and all that stuff, none of that is covered.
Although she is asking for donations, Mary says raising money is not the goal.
"Its to give him a new chance at life. Hes a very important member of the community but he is also important to our family. We also want to give hope to other people. There are people out there that are willing to donate they just need to be found.
In a few weeks Mary will have one less kidney, but her friends say she makes up for it with the size of her heart.
"You know what it feels right though. The minute the decision was made it was what I was supposed to do. It was what I was meant to do.
