Drainage area constructed for use as skatepark

By: Chrisdyann Uribe
EL PASO, Texas-- The city has built drain areas as a place for water to go but now there is areas to be used as more than just a drain.

Families of the new Rio Valley community can look forward to the drainage area in the community which will also be constructed as a skating park

Scott Winton, the developer for Rio Valley area says, "We felt like with this drainage facility, which is rarely used in El Paso, that the rest of the time we can use it for recreational purposes also."

The dual-purpose facility is expected to be completed by Friday.

At times when there is no rain, skaters can use the drain as a place to skate. The drainage area turned into a skate park is a trend that is starting to take off in the Borderland.

Phil Sullivan, a member of the El Paso Skatepark Association, is excited about the up-and-coming trend. This is actually the third drainage area.

Since the layout of a drainage area is similar to a skate park, it saves both time and money to merge the two rather than building two separate facilities. The price of the Carolina Skate Park alone was $625,000.

Sullivan thinks the concept is a money saver. "It's great to have a drainage area and a skate park because its a dual purpose. They're not spending extra money to build a separate facility for skateboarding."

When the idea was presented, El Paso Water Utilities was on board.

"Were really lucky in El Paso because the city is very open and very willing to work with the skateboarders," said Sullivan.

Winton believes it is an advantage to most areas. "The more diverse usage you have in the neighborhood, the more desirable the neighborhood is going to be," said Winton. "It gives kids a place to go and do things and healthy activities."

Members of the El Paso Skatepark Association will be designing the layout for the skate park. The first two drainage skate parks in the El Paso area is the Van Buren location and the Edgemont location in Santa, Teresa.
