KFOX Cares raises several hundred dollars for flood victims
By: Stacey Welsh
EL PASO COUNTY, Texas -- The KFOX Cares campaign with the El Paso Salvation Army raised several hundred dollars to help victims of last month's flood. The money will go to those in need in Socorro, San Elizario and southern New Mexico.
Salvation Army community relations director Rose Lucero-Mercado said the money collected through KFOX Cares will go toward Lowe's Home Improvement gift cards for families devastated by flood damage.
"We are helping families specifically in the flood zones that were identified by the American Red Cross and that had an assessment. It's important that the public understands that we are helping the families in the flood zones," Lucero-Mercado said.
Lucero-Mercado said all donations from KFOX Cares will go directly to those in need. The Salvation Army is set to start passing out donations to families the Red Cross assessed Wednesday.
"To be honest, we've been overwhelmed with all the things we've received the past two weeks. One woman had her house remodeled and brought in 12 doors," Lucero-Mercado said.
While the Salvation Army said it is using all resources available to help those in need, it most likely will not be able to help everyone affected by flooding.
Gerarda Lopez lives on Coker Road in Socorro, one of the hardest-hit areas. She said she has received help from neighbors and local nonprofits, but it will not be enough.
"We need a lot of help, because the reality is that we can't do this on our own," Lopez said.
The American Red Cross also said it is focused on long-term recovery for flood victims. That includes finding permanent housing for them.
