CVS pharmacy to replace east side businesses

By: Stacey Welsh

EL PASO, Texas -- One CVS pharmacy location will replace about 20 stores in the Eastwood Knolls shopping center near McRae Boulevard and Wedgewood Drive Mimco owns the space, and sent a notice to tenants Oct. 1 saying they have 90 days to move out.

According to Mimco's notice, the company is only obligated to let tenants know 60 days in advance. However, some local business owners say 90 days is not enough time.

"This is my first time to open a restaurant. I couldn't find any bank loan. I used a lot of my own money," Bamboo Kitchen owner Li Liu said.

Liu said her restaurant has only been open about seven months, and it took more than six months to get the location ready to open. She said she has not had enough time to save up money to move, and she wants to find a new location nearby that already has a kitchen.

"We saw a couple of locations, but we can't really afford them. It's tough for a business to move out in 60 days to open a new restaurant," Liu said.

Local business owners KFOX14 spoke with said Mimco is helping with moving expenses and giving breaks on rent. KFOX14 tried to contact Mimco Friday for more details on the sale but did not hear back.

Mark Miller owns Miller Shoe Repair, and his store is one of the longest standing tenants. He has already found a new location at McRae and Sims, but said he will end up moving to a smaller location.

"I was a small kid running around here when my grandparents opened it back in the 1960s. I've been coming through that front door a lot of years," Miller said.

Despite a CVS moving in, people KFOX14 spoke with said they plan to continue shopping at Walgreens just across the street.
