Police find vehicle involved in Northeast hit-and-run of 9-year-old girl
By: Bill Melugin
EL PASO, Texas --
The family of Maria Lewis, the 9-year-old victim of a hit-and-run in Northeast El Paso Sunday evening told KFOX14 police called them on Monday with good news.
"The detectives called and said they caught both the driver and the passenger, they didn't say how they caught these people, or where, but they found them," said Shanique Mullen, the victim's sister.
Mullen told KFOX14 she saw her sister in the hospital Monday, and that despite having serious injuries, she is expected to be OK.
"She has a small hole in her lung, which they think might heal on its own, but they're not sure, her liver is a little damaged, it has a cut, it was bleeding, and her leg is shattered," Mullen said. "Thank God that she's pulled through this, cause it was a scary experience."
Mullen said her sister was crossing the street with her bike, which had a flat tire, when the vehicle, a red Dodge pickup truck, hit her head-on.
The force of the impact knocked the grill off the front of the truck and damaged its headlights.
"What she's telling us is the passenger got out of the car, took her from under the car, picked her up, put her on the sidewalk, and he got back in the car and he left without checking to see if she was OK," Mullen said. "She said the driver was yelling at the passenger to get back in the car."
Mullen has a message for the driver and passenger of the truck.
"I think that you guys really deserve to be put in jail for life, because you didn't know if you left this little girl to die, you didn't know if she was dead, you looked a little girl in her eyes, and left her there hurt, crying, and unable to breathe," Mullen said.
