Loved ones gather to celebrate birthday of young boy found dead last May
By: Gina Benitez
EL PASO, Texas-Family and friends of a young boy found dead in his Lower Valley home last year gathered today for a memorial in his honor at his grave.
Isaiah Villanueva would have been 4 years old.
"Isaiah was so small and the beatings were intense, very intense. His little body just couldn't take it anymore," said Elizabeth Escarsega, the boy's grandmother.
Isaiah Villanueva was just 2 years old when he was found dead in his Lower Valley home in May 2012.
"I don't know what provoked him to do that to a baby that's only 2 years old," Villanueva said.
His mother's boyfriend, Ever Mendez, was arrested and charged with the boy's murder days later.
"Today we're celebrating his birthday. I know he's not here anymore, but we want to be here for this day," Escarsega said.
Today, family and friends gathered at Isaiah's grave to celebrate what would have been his fourth birthday.
"He was a very cheerful little baby and always smiling and he loved balloons, and he loved Spongebob and Spiderman," Escarsega said.
Spongebob and Mickey Mouse balloons surrounded his final resting place.
Along with posters, the balloons commemorated the little boy.
His loved ones sang "Happy Birthday" and let off balloons in the air.
Isaiah's grandmother never saw her grandson's death coming and hopes no one is ever faced with the same situation.
"I still ask myself why did it have to happen to us? What was the purpose?" Escarsega said.
