EP Times: Cabrera given more authority

By: Ruben Veloz, El Paso Times

EL PASO, Texas--- The El Paso ISD board of managers handed newly hired Superintendent Juan Cabrera the authority to hire and fire all EPISD employees, including senior positions.

Our media partner the El Paso Times reports the modification was made late Tuesday night, and is an addition to a change in policy made in June 2013.

Board President Dee Margo tells the times the changes were made under recommendations by the Texas Association of School Boards and would give Caberara "more skin in the game."

"In the ideal situation you hire the right person who makes the right decisions, and then you hire them accountable for decisions that person makes, who in turn holds the people he puts in position accountable," said Margo.

In June teacher representatives advised the board against the changes, but were approved 2-1.

However, the board still has the final say on whether Cabrera's decision can be approved, said the Times.

The district is currently interviewing for several empty positions, including a chief operations officer, a CFO, and a deputy superintendent of academics and school leadership.

October is also expected to be the last month that interim Deputy Superintendent Vernon Butler, and interim associate Superintendent Maria Gutierrez, and interim Assistant Superintendent Juni Mathews will work at EPISD.

The only position Cabrera isn't allowed to change is the internal auditor, the Times said.
